The
radio tracking group of the Cigüeña Negra ornithological collective has four
principle objectives:
·
Search and
localize migrating birds during their passage through the area of the Strait of
Gibraltar, in collaboration with different European radio tracking programmes
·
Search and
localize the cranes marked in different European countries, while they are
wintering in the provinces of Cadiz, Cordoba, Caceres and Badajoz (the “Grus
2007-2012” Project)
·
Verify by means
of radio tracking and control at the Strait of Gibraltar the recuperation of
migrating birds proceeding from recovery centres and animal hospitals.
·
Create a
European “Bank of Radio Frequencies” (BEF) with the intent to
avoid duplication of frequencies in different bird species, something that
happens often. One bank where each European association that is marking birds
with radio tracking devices can consult the free frequencies and use these.
Currently
the team disposes of two scanners of the latest generation, one mobile IC-R20
and one fixed IC-PCR1500 connected to a computer and permanently installed at
the Ornithological centre in Tarifa. With these scanners we are able to localize
birds carrying transmitters that pass through the Strait of Gibraltar during
their migration or while they are wintering in the area.
Therefore
all researchers and organisations that are radio-marking birds in Europe are
asked to pass us the frequencies they are using, species (scientific name),
country, date of marking and importantly the approximate duration of the
transmitter.
With
a little bit of good will and the participation of interested researchers we can
generate really important information for the conservation of these species.
Best
wishes, get inspired and many thanks
